The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers a flexible program leading to the Master of Arts in Spanish. Students have three options for completing the program, depending on which culminating project they choose. The culminating project reflects one of two areas of interest: (1) Literary and Cultural Studies and (2) Theoretical and Applied Linguistics.

Option 1 - Comprehensive Exam

33 hours minimum required:

• 6-hour core:

• • · One 3-hour course from Literary and Cultural studies: , ,Ìý ,Ìý
  • · One 3-hour course from Theoretical and Applied Linguistics: ,Ìý ,Ìý

• 27 hours of 400-level Spanish electives

• • 9 out of the 27 hours must be of an emphasis area
    • Emphasis area options include:
      • Literary and Cultural Studies:

      • Theoretical and Applied Linguistics:
      • , , , , ,
• A culminating project: the successful completion of a comprehensive exam

Note:

Courses taken for core cannot count toward the elective total. Unless otherwise specified, Spanish Elective courses can be satisfied with any 400-level Spanish course. A student must pass at least 6 courses that are taught in Spanish to graduate from this program. A maximum total of 9 credits from study in another department or at another university. Option 2 - Thesis

33 hours minimum required:

Students who write a thesis must complete at least 4 hours of 499 to fulfill the Graduate School requirement. Courses taken for core cannot count toward the elective total. Unless otherwise specified, Spanish Elective courses can be satisfied with any 400-level Spanish course. A student must pass at least 6 courses that are taught in Spanish to graduate from this program. A maximum total of 9 credits from study in another department or at another university. Designed to offer knowledge of instructional technology in the teaching of foreign/second languages. Nine (9) hours are required to earn the certificate, which include the following: one required course (3 hours); two elective courses (6 hours) from: , , . Graduate standing and a grade of B or better in coursework are required.
